Liberal Party welcomes success of Kangaroo Island feral pig eradication program

The Opposition has welcomed today’s announcement that Kangaroo Island has been declared free of feral pigs, describing it as a landmark biosecurity and environmental achievement that was made possible by long-term planning, strong local partnerships and investment initiated under the former Liberal Government.

“The former Liberal Government recognised that the post-bushfire period presented a once-in-a- generation opportunity to tackle this longstanding pest problem and committed support to get the program underway.”

Shadow Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, the Hon. Nicola Centofanti MLC, said the result was a testament to the commitment of Kangaroo Island landholders, producers, volunteers, landscape managers and government agencies who worked together over many years.

“This is an outstanding outcome for Kangaroo Island, its farming communities and South Australia’s biosecurity credentials,” Dr Centofanti said.

“Feral pigs cause significant damage to agricultural land, native vegetation, waterways and wildlife. Their eradication will deliver long-term benefits for both primary production and the environment.”

“Everyone involved should be incredibly proud of this achievement. It is a world-leading result and a significant win for Kangaroo Island and South Australia.”
